2009 Annual Family Beach Vacation to the Outer Banks
Southern Shores, NC
Saturday, June 27th thru Saturday, July 4th, 2009
For over 10 years my family has been getting together and renting a beach house on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
This year I really gave my new camera a workout taking over 1,000 photos. I whittled it down to a reasonable number and posted them to my webshots site. Except for the opening group shot photo, the set is in chronological order:

As usual, most of the daytime was just spent relaxing on the beach and around the pool wile being entertained by my nieces and nephews at play.
I got into the action as well as I am still not too old to enjoy some Boogie Boarding. However, I have determined that Skim Boarding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skimboarding) should not be attempted by anyone over the age of 30!
Most evenings were spent either enjoying the beach breezes while hanging out on one of several decks and porches, or joining in on the family card games.
In addition to the beach and pool, Amy and I did manage a couple of short day trips. First was up to Corolla to visit the Currituck Beach Light House and Heritage Park:

This is probably my favorite of the Outer Banks Lighthouse and Heritage park offers a nice setting to stroll around and enjoy the scenery.
Also in the area was the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education which we stepped inside to get a little AC

Amy and I decided to rename this place the Museum of Duck Decoys and Boat Motors. If you have ever been, you would know why!
We also took another short day trip to visit the US Army Corps of Engineers Coastal Waters Field Research Facility and Pier. They offer free tours at 10:00am every weekday during the summer:

Very interesting, but I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get to go out on the pier or climb the lookout tower.
We also made the short drive a couple of evenings to enjoy the sunset over the Currituck Sound.
The last evening was July 4th, so we went down to the beach and enjoyed the fireworks. This was my first attempt at fireworks photography and most were immediately deleted upon first view. However, I think some of them turned out pretty good.
Out of all the years we have been coming to the Outer Banks, this was the best week of weather we have ever experienced. The humidity was much lower than past years and it only rained for about 15 minutes the entire week.
As stated earlier, I took over 1,000 photos. Actually, I didn’t take all of them. There were about 300 photos alone of me Boogie Boarding. Taking photos with the rapid fire continuous shooting mode really adds up!
Plus, I used the continuous shooting mode a lot to try and capture the kids in mid air action while diving into the pool and when my brother Bill was tossing them up in the air.
It was a tough job trying to narrow it down, but here are some of my favorites of the bunch:
