Day 4
Garden of the Gods Sunrise, US Air Force Academy,
Fox Run Regional Park, and a trip to the ER

As usual, I was up before the sun so I decided to make one last visit to the Garden of the Gods for sunrise. It was definitely worth getting up early for!

After sunrise, I met back up with Amy and we headed out to visit the United States Air Force Academy. Very impressive campus!

Even for us non-religious types, the Cadet Chapel was definitely worth a visit! I consider architecture like this to be a form of art!

I don't post a whole lot of videos, but we were treated to a surprise performace by an A Cappella group from Texas Tech. So here is a short video of their performace!
Amy found something interesting about the Ute Indians in the area intentionally modifying the way some of the trees in the area grow. She saw something about Fox Run Regional park having a large number of these Ute Indian Culturally Modified Trees (aka Twisted Trees).

An added bonus was that all the trail inside the park are rated easy making them "Amy Approved". The hike started our very pleasant! We had no problems finding several of the Twisted Trees and a nice view of Pikes Peak!

We had the option of doing a shorter loop, but at the decision point Amy was feeling good enough to do the full loop (about 4 miles).
About as far away from the vehicle as possible an Alarm sounded on Amy's Insulin pump signaling a high blood sugar (300+). She might have sinned a little at breakfast and had a few too many carbs (those Strawberry Crepes were extra sweet). However, she thought she had taken enough Insulin that her blood glucose should be nowhere near that high!
By the time we got back to the vehicle Amy's blood sugar was up to over 500, which is well into the danger zone for Type 1 diabetics. A shot of Insulin plus some more through the pump and the blood sugar continued to rise. Fortunately just a few miles from the park is a little University of Colorado Hospital System Satellite ER.

Turns out Amy was so seriously dehydrated that the nurse could not even get any blood drawn until after (2) Liters of IV fluids. The severe dehydration was not allowing the insulin to be probably absorb and utilized by her body.

A few hours later, Amy was back to normal and we were good to go.
I needed a few liters of fluids as well after an afternoon in the ER!

We decided to have dinner at the Bristol Brewing Company located at the Ivywild Elementary School. This was a pretty cool spot! The school was shut down and abandoned years ago, but has recently been revitalized and turned into a brewery, distillery, coffee shop, and several pubs and restaurants!

Our final night in Colorado was spent in a little Studio Apartment Airbrb located much closer to the Colorado Springs Airport. Since we had a 6:00am flight, and we getting over an Emergency Room visit, we didn't plan anything else that evening.
A short sunset walk outside our rental yielded one final Colorado Sunset!
