The Rich Mountain Lookout Tower

My friend Jenni recently completed the North Carolina Waterfalls 500 Challenge. For her next hiking challenge she decided to start the North Carolina Lookout Tower Challenge.
I was able to join her on her first Lookout Tower hike up to Rich Mountain near Hot Springs, NC.
We started from Tanyard Gap and hiked the AT north up to the Tower. The thick fog blocked any long distance views, but it was still and enjoyable experience to be high up in the clouds!

For the return hike, we continued north on the AT a short distance and took FS Road 3514 most of the way back down to Tanyard Gap.

We finished up early enough that I decided to add a little extra hike in. I continued south on the AT and did a little Lollipop loop incorporating a section of the Pump Gap Trail.
