Amy and Jack's Memorial Day Weekend Getaway to Georgia
Chapter 9 - The Lake Burton Tornadoes
Rabun County, GA
Photos taken Sunday, May 29th, 2011
Back on April 27th a Super cell of storms hit the South East. Everyone has heard and seen photos of severe death and destruction this series of storms leveled on Alabama. However, around 11:00pm this storm also brought a series of Tornadoes to the Lake Burton area of Rabun County, GA.
I would have thought this area was way too mountainous for tornadoes to form, but driving from Wildcat Creek Falls to Moccasin Creek State Park we witnessed some of the destruction first hand.
Over 50 homes were destroyed along the shores of Lake Burton, GA. The only good thing is that most of these homes are weekend homes and were empty at the time the tornado hit. There were (2) deaths in the area, but it could have been much worse if this storm struck on the weekend
