The Grandfather Mountain
Nature Photography Weekend and Photo Contest
Friday, June 3rd through Sunday June 5th, 2011
Grandfather Mountain, NC

I am not done with the trip reports from last weekends Georgia Getaway.  However, I am going to take a day off from posting about that and give an update from this weekend.

I participated in the Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend and Photo Contest.

One of the great things about these events is it gives you access to Grandfather Mountain when it is normally closed to the public.  In the summer, the park is open from 8:00am to 7:00pm which means missing out on any Sunrise or Sunset opportunities.  So the main reason I decided to attend this event is to be able to camp out at Grandfather Mountain and take advantage of this rare photo opportunity.

Believe it or not, I pitched a tent and it didn't rain a drop all weekend.

The way the photo contest works is you have 24 hours (Friday 3:00pm through Saturday 3:00pm) to roam around the mountain and take photos of anything you want as long as the photos are taken "on or of the Mountain".  By 3:00pm Saturday you have to submit your best (3) shots for judging.

There are (4) categories you can submit the photos under
1. Animals in Nature
2. Animals in the Grandfather Mountain Animal Habitats
3. Scenic
4. Wildflowers

This morning they showed all the winning photographs and presented certificates of recognition to the winners.

I ended up winning 3rd place and an honorable mention (aka 4th or 5th place) in the "Animals in Nature" Category.
Honorable Mention - Animals in Nature (Amature Class)

3rd Place - Animals in Nature (Amature Class)

I'll post some more details from this weekend and plenty more photos after I finish up last weekends trip reports!
